Truly committed in constructing modern infrastructure, Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) will soon have a state-of-the-art gymnatorium that will cater to big sports and cultural activities, both for the University and other organizations.

MMSU is currently constructing the Php 212 million-worth gymnatorium located at the Sports Complex in the main campus in Batac City. The project was funded through the support of Senator Manny Pacquiao and Antique Representative Loren Legarda.

Combining the amenities of a gymnasium and an auditorium, the building has a total floor area of 8,444.77 square meters with a total seating capacity of 3,000 and a stage area of 300 square meters. Included in the building are dance studios, a fitness center, dressing rooms, rehearsal areas, offices, cafeteria and restrooms.

Once built, the gymnatorium will be managed by the university’s Center for Human Movement Studies (CHuMS).  The new infrastructure will serve the students in their physical education classes, sports activities, and other socio-cultural and artistic presentations, said CHuMS Director Rowell Tagatac.

“The facility can serve as our venue for major activities that are being organized by the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association, Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges, and the Association of State Colleges and Universities - Solid North,” Tagatac further explained.

MMSU gymnatorium will also be open to the public for sports and fitness trainings, which may include Philippine Basketball Association and national volleyball tournaments. The public, particularly the Department of Education and local government units in Ilocos Norte, and other agencies from the neighboring provinces may also request for the use of the facility.

All components in the building are retrofitted in compliance with the government’s COVID-19 guidelines and protocols. This is in preparation for the integration of face-to-face in the university’s blended learning modality.

“The completion of the Gymnatorium will be an immense help to fulfill our mandate of quality education to our students,” said MMSU President Shirley C. Agrupis, thanking the national government for supporting the university in its endeavor to create a vibrant and nurturing campus.

Composed of five phases, the multimillion-peso project started in 2019, and is expected to be completed next year. (HLY/JVBT, StratCom)
