MMSU, Japanese company hold waste-to-energy lecture forum

The Mariano Marcos State University partnered with Mitsubishi Heavy Industry (MHI) Power IDS for a lecture forum on waste-to-energy technology held February 27 at the Center for Flexible Learning.

Anchored on the theme, "Solution and Dioxins  Removal Technology: Japan's Successful Waste Disposal Practices," the seminar was led by Mr. Shuji Makiura, a consultant of MHI power and revered expert in the power industry, power generation, and waste-to-energy (WtE) technology. 

Mr. Makiura shared the history of waste disposal in Japan, Dioxins and Dioxin-like compounds, and solid waste reduction. He also discussed how Dioxins are a leading contributor to pollution and are incredibly harmful to the environment. 

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of resolving waste generation issues and establishing a proper disposal system. 

Dr. Bjorn Santos, director of the National Bioenergy Research and Innovation Center (NBERIC), expressed his gratitude towards MHI Power IDS for discussing essential issues on waste disposal. He also hoped that students would be more exposed to industry knowledge and experience. 

In August 2023, MMSU and MHI Power IDS signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to foster academia-industry collaborations. This first activity under the MoU included faculty members and students of the electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, agricultural and biosystems engineering, and environmental science programs.
