In line with the International Educational Pickleball Programs, MMSU, through its Department of Physical Education (DPE), hosted an introductory session and workshop on pickleball today, August 6, at the Teatro Ilocandia Basement. The Asia Pickleball Academy and the Philippine Pickleball Federation organized the event.
The session featured Coach Jeff van der Hulst, Ambassador of the International Pickleball Federation in the United Kingdom, Coach Michael Ray Jhonson, President of the Philippine Pickleball Federation, and Loli van der Hulst. They provided insights into the basics of pickleball, demonstrating techniques and strategies such as how to serve, use the paddle, maintain proper body positions, and follow other game rules.
“Pickleball brings people together. Just have fun and develop yourself in the game,” Coach Jeff van der Hulst expressed.
After the introductory session, participants engaged in hands-on practice to experience the game firsthand.
Among the participants were Prof. Ryan Dean Sucgang, director of the Center for Human Movement Studies; Prof. Herdy Yumul, director of the Office for Strategic Communication; Prof. Floresto Franco Jr., chief of sports development; and other DPE faculty members.
Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It is played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes.
The activity is part of the lead-up to National Pickleball Day, celebrated annually on August 8.
