A group of students from MMSU College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) emerged champion in the intercollegiate biology quiz virtually conducted by the University of the Philippines (UP) Cell Biology Society in Los Baños last October 16.

Jaydee Jaurique, Irish Joy Angel Ulep, and Zoe Hendrix Reynera, biology students, garnered the highest score of 54 points, earning the top spot in the contest. Mr. Elpidio P. Cadalzo and Prof. Mae Rose M. Maoirat-Abad served as their coach.

These students received 5,000 cash prize and certificates in the competition.

Dubbed HAYNAYAN 2021: CELLpukan ng Talino at Galing, the quiz bee aimed to challenge the biological knowledge of students that major in biology-related fields.

The CAS team bested the other 14 teams from seven colleges across the country: Polytechnic University of the Philippines; Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University; Pangasinan State University; University of Southern Mindanao; Laguna State Polytechnic University; and Isabela State University.

Meanwhile, another group of CAS students – Jimmbeth Zenila Fabia, Josam Racho, and Leonarc Vincent Abellon – placed seventh in the quiz bee.

Dr. Doreen D. Domingo, chair of biology department, congratulated the students and their coaches, saying their feat proves excellent instruction delivered by the college. She also assured them “the department is always here to support all your undertakings.”

The contest was part of the UP-CBS’ week-long exhibit with the theme, "Bioindustrial Revolution: Envisioning Food Sustainability through Cellular Agriculture.”

Held from October 10-16, the event aimed to deepen biology students’ understanding of cellular agriculture (production of animal-sourced foods from cell culture). (StratCom)
