A UNITED States-based researcher conducted Aug. 28 a seminar on the economics and challenges of the US bioenergy industry.

Dr. Mark J. Gehlhar, senior economist of the Economic Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture, spoke on the mission area and responsibilities of the US government agency involvement in bioenergy; the current status of US biofuels and market developments; bioenergy policy and economic implications; and the role of new technologies and public investment.

Gehlhar leads one of ERS’ research programs on bioenergy focused on achieving President George W. Bush’s mandated Renewable Fuel Standard.  The ERS is a primary source of economic information and research in the USDA.  It conducts a research program to inform public and private decision making on economic and policy issues involving food, farming, natural resources, and rural development.

Development of renewable energy sources is gaining momentum in the United States today as spurred by raising fuel prices, environmental concerns, pressures for oil independence, and Federal energy policy. Deriving bio-energy from plant materials is currently among the fastest growing renewable energy technologies in the United States.  For transportation fuel, corn-based ethanol is by far the largest source of bio-energy in the United States at this time.  Dr. Gehlhar’s group analyzes and projects impacts of bio-energy development on commodity supply and demand, farm earnings and expenses, and retail food prices.

The visit of Dr. Gehlhar was made possible by Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis, chief of the International Programs Division of the External Affairs and Partnerships Directorate.  While in Chicago, Illinois in July this year to present a paper in the 2007 Plant Biology and Botany Joint Congress, she also visited USDA where she conferred with Dr. Catalino A. Blanche, national program leader of the USDA Natural Resources and Environment Unit, who she met during the Philippine-American Association for Science and Engineering Conference held in Manila. It was Dr. Blanche who arranged the visit of Gehlhar

The visit of the American researcher opens opportunities for MMSU for potential collaborations especially with the identification of MMSU as center for bio-energy research and development in Region I.
