Student wins in PSQ reg’l finals

Darell Jhon A. Calaro, a first year BS Civil Engineering student of MMSU, emerged champion in the 25th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) Regional Finals held at the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office I in San Fernando City, La Union last November 12.

Coached by Engr. Jonas Paul dela Cruz, Calaro bested 21 college students from the four provinces in the region. Of the 22 participants, seven of which are from La Union, and five each are from Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and Pangasinan.

Engr. Dela Cruz said that the representatives from Ilocos Norte were composed of three students of MMSU and two from the Northwestern University in Laoag City.

Prior to the regional finals, they underwent the provincial eliminations held last October 25.

Calaro was among the PSQ regional champions who competed in the national finals held on November 29 in Metro Manila.

The PSQ, which started in 1992, is spearheaded by the Philippine Statistics Authority and the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. The Contest envisions appraising the students’ competency and skills in statistics as acquired from high school curriculum. It also aims to assess the proficiency in statistics of college freshmen and to promote public awareness and appreciation on the significance of the field statistics. Realizing the noble cause of the competition, the Commission on Higher Education began endorsing the PSQ in 1994.
