THE UNIVERSITY Main Library received donations in the form of books and digital video conferencing system from The Asia Foundation and from the US Embassy in Manila.
The Asia Foundation, through its Books for Asia Program, gave 100 volumes of books on agriculture and forestry, arts and humanities, biology and environmental science, business economics and management, communication, language and literature, computer science, global issues, health sciences, political science, sociology, and anthropology. The materials came with accompanying CDs.
The foundation also donated six issues of the American Zoologist, a journal of integrative and comparative biology.
According to University Library System Director Lucena R. Felipe, the donation is timely and significant because the information resources are those highly demanded by library users.
The US Embassy in Manila, on the other hand, has donated a PolyCom V500 digital video conferencing system in addition to the resources that the embassy is sending regularly to the American Studies Resource Center (ASRC) based at MMSU.
The Books for Asia Program
The Books for Asia is a program of The Asia Foundation that regularly distributes books and other reading materials for all educational levels in over 15 countries. Since it was first started in Sept. 1954, Books for Asia has distributed more than 40 million books and journals to more than 50,000 academic and non-academic institutions throughout Asia. In the Philippines alone, the Books for Asia Program has distributed 13 million books and journals to public and private institutions across the country as a contribution to national development, international understanding, and English-language literacy.
The ASRC
The ASRC, on the other hand, was established at MMSU in 1984 to make available various information resources about US history, life and culture, and political and social processes; promote understanding of the US and its people; support courses related to the study of the US; serve as venue of seminars in American studies and as focal point at which visitors may spend time in campus with students and faculty; and provide educational advising services for Filipinos who wish to study in the US. It is housed at the first floor, northwestern wing of the MMSU Main Library.
