MMSU, 1st HEI certified as affiliated renewable energy center

The Department of Energy (DOE) recognized Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), under the leadership of the university President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano Jr., as a Center for Affiliated Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency and Conservation (CARE).
Formerly known as the Affiliated Renewable Energy Centers (ARECs), CARE recognizes the university’s efforts in promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency and conservation through activities like research, education, and commercialization support.
Pursuant to Republic Act No. 9513, otherwise known as the Renewable Energy Act of 2008, the law provides for the State to encourage and accelerate the exploration, development, and increase the utilization of renewable energy resources. In implementing this law, the DOE taps the academic institutions like MMSU in order to realize the Renewable Energy Act of 2008.
Over the years, MMSU has led several renewable energy projects, including research on bioethanol and training programs to help Local Government Units (LGUs) use sustainable energy. The university also houses the National Bioenergy Research and Innovation Center (NBERIC).
The longstanding partnership between MMSU and DOE dates back to the 1980s with the establishment of ARECs.
