THE UNIVERSITY recently received special donation of six cartons of books from The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia program in partnership with the Book Donation Program of Sabre Foundation.

The first list consisted of 208 volumes of books and the second list included high-school level information resources consisting of 19 volumes of books and one set of instructional materials about the United States as well as college-level books totaling 50 volumes.  Such resources can be found at the American Studies Resource Center.

The books offer a wide range of subjects such as: general references, arts/humanities, biology, business/management/accounting/economics, chemistry, education, engineering/technology, environmental science/ecology, general science, geography, health/medical sciences, history, language/communication/literature, law, mathematics, physical education, politics/government, psychology, and sociology/anthropology/social studies.

The Books for Asia program of The Asia Foundation started in 1954 and has distributed over 13 million books and journals to public and private institutions across the Philippines as a contribution to national development, international understanding, and English language literacy.  Donations of books for this program are from American publishers, libraries, and bookstores.

Sabre Foundation, on the other hand, was founded in 1969 by a group of recent American university graduates with the aim of examining the philosophical underpinnings of free institutions and working to enhance their vitality.  The foundation’s book donation program started in 1986 as an outgrowth of its long-standing philosophical programs.

According to University Library System Director Lucena R. Felipe, the donations have significantly contributed to the satisfaction of the information needs of library users and to the accreditation of the university’s various curricular programs.
