THE COLLEGE of Aquatic Sciences and Applied Technology, Administration Building, Crops Research Laboratory, College of Engineering, and College of Arts and Sciences have been named top electricity savers (percentage category) for the period January-May 2006.
The report came from the Energy Management Committee composed of engineers Edmund Edison A. Esteban, Rogelio U. Binala, Wilson R. Duldulao, Romaric G. Ascaño, Thomas D. Ubiña, Nathaniel Mateo, and Sharona Barroga.
In a report submitted to President Miriam E. Pascua, the group said that the same units and colleges are the top electricity savers according to kWHrs savings during the same period mentioned. According to them, few colleges and units have been consistently observing energy conservation policies in the university which explains why “we are not able to save electricity despite the effort of the few.”
In September-November 2005, the university saved as much as 10 percent in electricity consumption; however it increased to as high as 12 percent in January-April this year compared to the consumption during the same period last year. Nevertheless, in May 2006, the university recovered and was able to save by about 6 percent.
On the whole, however, electricity consumption from January to May 2006 rose by about 6 percent compared to the consumption during the same period in 2005. According to the committee, the increase could be attributed to additional electrical loads, conduct of big events, and non-observance of the energy conservation program.
At present, the committee has been submitting to the Department of Energy MMSU’s monthly fuel and electricity consumption. They have also been conducting data gathering and analysis of fuel/electricity consumption of the different colleges and units of the university. They plan to put up a bulletin board to update colleges and units on their respective monthly energy consumptions to make these aware of whether they are conserving; conduct a seminar on maintenance of electrical equipment; and do calibration on fuel consumption of all MMSU vehicles to establish specific mileage per liter.
