DR. NENALYN P. Defensor, Commission on Higher Education commissioner and MMSU BOR chairman, asked the MMSU administration to review tuition and other fees collected from foreign students who enroll in the university and ordered that these be compared to those collected by private schools.
This developed as the BOR chair asked where the university based the schedule of fees presented during the last regular meeting of the board, Sept. 6. According to her, foreign students are not supposed to pay the same fee as the local students’. She added that all SUCs should charge uniform fees. As such, she asked President Pascua to bring the issue to the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges meeting for uniformity of policy on the matter.
On July 12, the University Academic Council during its 92nd meeting approved admission policies and requirements for foreign students, both for the graduate and undergraduate levels, for confirmation by the BOR.
A foreign student at the graduate level pays average school fees of $1,925 per semester. This is broken down into: $1,375, total tuition and other fees; and $550, dormitory and Internet fees. A student is required to take nine units per semester.
On the other hand, a student at the undergraduate level is charged P1,780 per semester broken down into: $1,230, total tuition and other fees; and $550, dormitory and Internet fee. A student is required to take 21 units every semester.
According to President Pascua, the administration based the said school fees from those collected from Taiwanese students who enrolled at the College of Teacher Education to take graduate studies on early childhood education.
The BOR approved in principle the admission policies and requirements for foreign students subject to comparison of school fees with private schools.
