DUE TO many requests from farmers, six more goats will be dispersed this year by the Extension Directorate under its Livestock Dispersal Project.

This totals to 19 the number of goats offered for dispersal by the program. Last year, 13 were given out to 13 individuals from four municipalities of Ilocos Norte.

To avail of the animals for dispersal, an interested farmer must submit a letter of intent to Dr. Miriam E. Pascua, MMSU president.  Upon her approval of the request, the farmer would then go through a pre-dispersal training under a livestock specialist from the training and continuing education program of the Extension Directorate.

To ensure the security of the farmer-beneficiary and the university in case of accident and unexpected diseases that might strike the animal, the Extension Directorate will insure the dispersed animals to the Philippine Crop Insurance.

A 1:2 scheme is followed in the payment of the dispersed animal. For every dispersed doe, two weaned does/bucks should be returned.  The beneficiary may opt to return one doe/buck in one kidding and another one in the next kidding or he may choose to return two doe/bucks at once. Upon payment, the dispersed goat becomes a property of the beneficiary.  Subsequently, returned does (as payment) will be again dispersed to qualified clients.

The Livestock Dispersal Project

The Livestock Dispersal Project was revived last year with the ultimate aim of increasing the income of farming households by providing additional source of livelihood through the dispersal of improved breeds of livestock, specifically goat and cattle.

Initially, the plan of the Extension Directorate was to disperse sheep; however, most farmers requested for goats.  This is the reason the directorate, together with its livestock specialist, decided to continue dispersing goat based on availability of funds.

To date, three of the does dispersed  last year have already given birth with one kid each.  The university will get back the kids upon reaching the desired age and will be then again dispersed to qualified clients.

Interested farmers who are interested to avail of the Livestock Dispersal Project of the Extension Directorate may submit their letter of intent to the University President or visit the office of the Extension Directorate.
