In celebration of the International Day of Sign Languages, the MMSU Language Center (MLC) conducted an “Introductory Lecture-Workshop on Filipino Sign Language (FSL)” for BA in English Language students on September 24 at the Center for Flexible Learning (CFL).
During the lecture-workshop, Ms. Joanalyn Vertido, an Administrative Officer at the Office of the University and Board Secretary and Mr. Vernon Jeffery Ponce, Bachelor of Special Needs Education (BSNED) Program Coordinator served as the resource speakers. In their lectures they shared the importance of FSL in making communication accessible to everyone. They also encouraged participants to appreciate deaf culture and cultivate patience, empathy, and understanding across different ways of expression.
Meanwhile, MLC Chief Ryan Roi Domingo highlighted that the workshop served a broader purpose. “We are not conducting this activity not simply for us to learn basic sign languages. It is also an opportunity for us to better understand deaf culture and appreciate Filipino sign language as a legitimate language,” Mr. Domingo said.
“Communication is a fundamental right, and language will never be a barrier to participation and belonging,” he added.
The workshop concluded with hands-on FSL practice, allowing students to develop their communication skills relevant to their academic training and future careers.
