To enhance institutional identity, public relations and information dissemination, a team from the MMSU Office for Strategic Communication (STRATCOM) completed a digital storytelling training on September 28-30 at Baguio City.
Representing STRATCOM were Robert Joe Pagtama, Information Officer; Ian Paul Villanueva; Senior Communication Writer; Criztalene Victorio, News and Feature Writer; Christian Rick Asuncion, Publication Design Editor and Bea Angelina Duldulao, University Press Senior Editor.
Organized by the Philippine Information Agency Regional Office 1, the three-day capability-building training is part of its “GEAR UP. CHANGE. GROW.” series. With the theme “2026 LEG: Empowering Government Communication: Mastering the Art of Digital Storytelling,” the activity was conducted in collaboration with the Government Communicators Guild of Region 1, Inc. (GCG R1, Inc.) and the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office 1 (DA-RFO1).
DA-RFO1 Regional Executive Director Fidel Libao explained that the event would strengthen the capacity of government communicators across the region and serve as a bridge between the government and the people built on accuracy, credibility, and humanity.
Meanwhile, GCG R1, Inc. President Ervin Malapit said, "Government communication is not simply about the government talking to the people. It is the government connecting to the people,” emphasizing the core purpose of public information.
The training featured expert-led lectures and hand-on workshops on social media graphics, mobile journalism, content creation for public information including publication materials, newsletter, and video contents. Resources speakers included Ctrl Shift Studio Creative Director Cynrick Custodio, ABS-CBN Deputy Editor and Patrol ng Pilipino News Digital Head Anjo Bagaoisan, Freelance Multimedia Producer and Photojournalist Basilio Hullueza Sepe and DOST Head of Science and DOST Science and Technology Promotion Head Lemuel Castigo
Participants acquired and applied practical strategies and creative frameworks that support digital storytelling transformation in public information dissemination.
“The training gave me new perspectives about the crucial role that government communication plays in public service. It made me better appreciate the work that STRATCOM does,” Mr. Villanueva shared.
Equipped with practical insights, and new skills, the STRATCOM team is expected to bring these competencies in their respective office, contributing to the university's efforts to strengthen institutional identity and public relations and reliable digital information efforts.
