MMSU faculty undergo training on gender-responsive curriculum and instruction

Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) faculty members kicked off the “Training-Workshop on GAD Integration in Curriculum Development, Syllabus Design, and Teaching Methodologies” running on September 22-24, at the Center for Flexible Learning.

The three-day training aims to strengthen the university’s capacity to mainstream Gender and Development (GAD) principles into instruction through gender-responsive syllabus design and inclusive teaching methodologies.

The activity is organized by the GAD Directorate in collaboration with the Curriculum Development and Innovative Learning (CDIL).

In her opening remarks, Ms. Nataliza Llapitan, Director of Gender and Development, highlighted MMSU continuous efforts in promoting GAD across its core functions. “As a premier state university in Northern Luzon, MMSU will remain committed to promoting GAD across its core functions of instruction, research, extension, and production,” she said.

In the first lecture, Dr. Marianne Villaruel, Director of External Linkages and International Affairs of Tarlac Agricultural University, discussed “GAD Orientation and Gender Sensitivity Enhancement,” focusing on basic GAD concepts and the importance of providing equal opportunities and resources to all genders.

Meanwhile, Prof. Bryan Eli Sadora, Chief of the Office of Instructional Material Development, tackled “Gender-Responsive Syllabus Design,” equipping participants with knowledge and strategies for incorporating gender sensitivity into syllabi, classroom instruction and institutional policies. He recently represented the university in a Learning Exchange Program on Designing Gender-Transformative Syllabi at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.

“Understanding SOGIESC helps institutions like MMSU to design inclusive policies such as gender-sensitive space, safe learning environments, and equitable workplace practices,” Prof. Sadorra added.

President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano Jr. also expressed his support for the training, noting how gender responsiveness aligns with the SUCCEED agenda, particularly in S - strategic access and equity; U - universal quality education; and E - exemplary governance.
