SMAP journalism workshop launched
IN HONOR of the late Dr. Sosimo Ma. Pablico (SMAP), former MMSU professor and director of the Communication and Media Relations Office, student journalists held the 1st SMAP Journalism Workshop, June 18-19, at the University Training Center.
Local newspaperman Steve Barreiro keynoted the event on the theme, \"Bridging the youth and politics towards good governance\". Barreiro, who survived an assassination attempt last year, challenged the young writers to be \"brave but careful,\" \"uncompromised and responsible.\" In a message, President Miriam Pascua referred to the student journalists as \"partners\" in keeping the university constituency informed, and in inculcating the right set of values among the youth.
During the two-day affair, experts were invited to train students on the various facets of journalism, including news, features, sports, opinion and editorial writing, and layouting and photography.
Dr. Pablico in 1983 founded Sirmata, the official publication of MMSU college students. A multi-awarded agriculture journalist, he was highly regarded in professional writing circles in the country and in Southeast Asia. He taught social sciences subjects at the College of Arts and Sciences.
He passed away April 22, 2009.
