CAS student org holds int’l congress on communication

Truly a borderless student organization, the Young Communicators’ Circle (Y2C) of the MMSU College of Arts and Sciences has conducted an international virtual activity for the second time.

 

The organization of BA Communication students held its second international Young Communicative Human in Development (YouComManD) Congress via Zoom and Facebook live on April 4-6. 

 

This year’s virtual congress revolved around the theme, “Welcoming a New Era of #GEN-C (Groundbreaking, Empowered, and Nobly-skilled Communicators) and Discovering the Extensive Power of Communication.”

 

More than 200 communication students and faculty members from higher education institutions in Ilocos Norte and North Luzon, and those from the universities in Indonesia attended the three-day online event.

 

Y2C President Brandon Barayuga said the event was composed of three major webinars, with reputable communication and media practitioners from various universities and private organizations in the Philippines and abroad as resource persons. 

 

Speakers for the creative power of communication were Mr. Zig Madamba Dulay, director and writer; Mr. Melver Ritz Gomez, film-maker and MMSU instructor; Prof. Benigno B. Agapito, dean of Mapua University - School of Media Studies; and Ayris Alcachupas, book author. Specifically, four topics were discussed: The Depiction of Social Issues in Film by Dulay; The Thriving Ilokano Film-making Industry by Gomez; Equipping Communicators with Visual Communication Skills by Agapito; and Powerful Narratives and Communicating Stories by Alcachupas. 

 

Speakers for communication in the context of multiple disciplines were Ms. Sara Handayani of the Universitas Muhammadiyah Prof DR HAMKA - Faculty of Health and Sciences; Mr. Andrew Jonathan Bagaoisan, deputy secretary general of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines; Ms. Gaea Katreena Cabico, climate and environment journalist and senior writer of Philippine Star; and Mr. Brett Andrew Rikke Bungcayao, CAS communication faculty and one of the Y2C advisers. They tackled health and science communication, mobile journalism, and environment and climate change communication, and print media, respectively.

 

Moreover, media literacy were tackled by Mr. Alexander Le Voci Sayad, co-chair of the International Steering Committee of UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Alliance; Mr. Marlon Julian S. Nombrado, co-founder of Out of the Box Media Literacy Initiative; Dr. Hemmady S. Mora, dean of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines - College of Communication; and Dr. Shakuntala Banaji of London School of Economics. They discussed the Threats of Digital Media and other Platforms to an Informed Community; Advocating Media and Information Literacy; Healthy Media and Information Consumption in the Digital Age; and Children Education and Media. 

 

The YouComManD Congress is an annual event which started in 2014. Last year, Y2C held its first international congress that discussed the role of communication in facing the COVID-19 pandemic. (HLY/JVBT/DPTJ, StratCom)
