Fire trees to soon adorn road to MMSU Village; PJM leads tree-growing activity

By Ian Paul Villanueva

A total of 150 fire trees are expected to adorn the MMSU Village Road with vibrant scarlet blooms after MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr. led the ceremonial planting on July 14.

Joined by members of the university community, the participants included students, faculty members, university officials, and local government leaders from cities and municipalities where our campuses are located. Among them were City of Batac Vice Mayor Albert Chua, Laoag City Vice Mayor Rey Carlos Fariñas, Nueva Era Mayor Aldrin Garvida, Nueva Era Vice Mayor Caroline Garvida, and Bangui Mayor Denton Garvida. Also in attendance was former MMSU President Santiago Obien.

Members of the Rotary Club of Laoag Sunshine, an NGO partner of MMSU, came in full force.

The university had earlier planned to grow about 150 fire trees on both sides of the MMSU Village Road, which is envisioned by President Manzano to become a more walkable, shaded, and pleasing path for passersby

Dr. Manzano explained the environmental effort is aimed at attaining a more beautiful campus, one that could even attract tourists. He noted that “this simple activity can have profound benefits in the long run by allowing sustainable processes to prosper.”

He added that the actual mass planting of the trees will be done in coordination with concerned government agencies, even as the rehabilitation of the road will start in the near future. “We already have the budget to rehabilitate the MMSU Village Road, so it is only right that we coordinate this tree growing initiative with the concerned offices,” he said.

Following the tree planting activity, participants were treated to a breakfast at the MMSU Center for Flexible Learning.

The activity is part of the annual MMSU Tree Growing Program was spearheaded by the Department of Forestry of the College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development. Last year, President Manzano marked his first birthday as university president with a coconut planting program in the Batac and Currimao campuses.
