IA visit concludes: No mandatory recommendations for MMSU

By Ian Paul Villanueva

As proof of its commitment to consistently improving to serve its mandate, Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) Batac Campus received zero mandatory recommendations from the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines, Inc. (AACCUP) as its three-day institutional accreditation visit concluded on June 26.

During the closing program that concluded the three-day visit of accreditors, AACCUP Executive Director Dr. Milabel Ho commended MMSU, especially the top management led by MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr., for braving accreditation preparations amid the close scheduling with recent big events in the university and for obtaining no mandatory recommendations.

“The report has already given you a good picture of how you were and how you are [as an institution]... I would like to congratulate you because, out of [the accreditors’] observations, Mariano Marcos State University has not been provided or given mandatory recommendations,” Dr. Ho remarked.

“But this is not the end of the road. We continue to sustain quality assurance. To the QA team of the university and to the hardworking members of the MMSU community, I’d like to say thank you very much for your support, and the trust that you put in AACCUP is very much appreciated with gratitude,” she concluded.

During the three-day activity, MMSU’s document submissions to AACCUP were verified and scrutinized by the team of accreditors led by Lead Accreditor Dr. Anthony Penaso, alongside fellow accreditors Dr. Erwin Lacanlale, Dr. Jonar Yago, Dr. Liza Tamargo, and Dr. Dexter Buted.

AACCUP evaluated MMSU Batac Campus as an institution across nine areas: Governance and Management; Teaching, Learning, and Evaluation; Faculty and Staff; Research; Extension, Consultancy, and Linkages; Support to Students; Library; Infrastructure and Other Learning Resources; and Quality Assurance Culture.

In giving the accreditors’ general impressions of the university, Dr. Penaso thanked the MMSU community for its hospitality and named the university’s strengths and opportunities for improvement in each of the nine areas of evaluation.

“We must not only be looking at what works well, or our successes [as a university], but also the opportunities for improvement. Continuous improvement is the name of the game in total quality management,” he said.

In his message, Dr. Manzano thanked the visiting accreditors for the expert insights and recommendations they gave the university, which it will “use to keep improving our systems to better fulfill MMSU’s mandate as a state university.”

He also described the rigorous three-day institutional accreditation as a test of leadership and resilience, and expressed the university's commitment to complying with all the recommendations of AACCUP.

“Having heard the feedback from our accreditors, we learned a lot about ourselves as an institution. We know that we are not a perfect university, but our commitment to sustaining quality assurance is apparent in the culture that we are fostering. This gives me the confidence that we will work to continue improving our university,” he added.

In 2020, when MMSU Batac Campus was last accredited, MMSU obtained a Level III institutional accreditation. This year, MMSU aimed to be recognized as a Level IV campus after five years of compliance with the 2020 recommendations.
