By Jedd Bryant Boado
Aiming to translate research into practical gains for farmers, the Livestock Research Division (LRD) of the DOST Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) visited MMSU on May 26. The visit was part of the three-day “Training on Ensuring Sustainable Production of Bolinao Native Chicken Through Organized Breeding and Production Strategies.”
The delegation was led by Dr. Synan Baguio, LRD Director. He was joined by Dr. Ronilo De Castro, Supervising Science Research Specialist; Dr. Marites Dayo, Senior Science Research Specialist; Ms. Glenda Fule, Science Research Specialist II; Mr. Rundolfo Llamas, Science Research Specialist II; Mr. Richarlm Doctor, Project Technical Assistant IV; Mr. Antonio Vallejo, Administrative Aide VI; and Mr. Herald Nygel Bautista, a researcher from UP Los Baños.
MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr. warmly received the delegation at FEM Hall. In his message, Dr. Manzano assured DOST-PCAARRD that the university will continue to support its various programs that uplift communities, especially in the agricultural sector.
“MMSU supports local food security and resilient livestock production through science-based innovations. We believe that through these programs, we are actively helping our people, especially in the agricultural sector, to stand on their own and thrive,” Dr. Manzano said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Baguio thanked MMSU for pursuing the Bolinao Native Chicken Production project. He expressed hope that the university would help promote the native chicken in Ilocos Norte through the province’s native delicacies.
“We are very thankful to MMSU for pursuing this project. We hope that you will help us promote the Bolinao native chicken in your province through Ilocos Norte’s ethnic delicacies,” Dr. Baguio said.
After their courtesy visit to Dr. Manzano, the DOST-PCAARRD team proceeded to the University Board Review Center to officially open the training program. The opening program was attended by university officials, local farmers, backyard raisers, and private sector representatives from Region 1.
Representing Dr. Manzano, MMSU Research Director Dr. Dionisio Bucao delivered a message expressing gratitude to DOST for conducting training programs such as the sustainable production of Bolinao native chicken. He said the initiative aligns with the university’s objective of developing productive and self-reliant communities.
“Our ultimate goal has always been to transform our human resources into productive, self-reliant citizens and empowered leaders. This training program on the sustainable production of Bolinao chicken reflects our commitment to fulfilling that objective,” Dr. Bucao said.
For two days, participants engaged in lectures on the production, marketing, and disease control of native chickens. On the final day, participants visited a Bolinao native chicken farm in Batac City to observe large-scale Bolinao native chicken management practices.
This is the first time DOST-PCAARRD has conducted this kind of training at MMSU. The initiative forms part of the agency’s preparation for the rollout of the outputs of its Bolinao Native Chicken Breed Research and Development (R&D) project, which will be distributed to private sector clients.
