The athletic urn has been lit as the 2026 SCUAA-1 Regional Games and PASUC-1 Regional Culture and Arts Festival officially opened on February 23 at the President Elpidio Quirino Stadium, Bantay, Ilocos Sur.

MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr. beamed with pride as he joined the 582 delegates of the university during the parade. “I am in full joy that I am in one spirit with our student-athletes and artists as they showcase what they’ve got in various games and competitions,” he said.

Prof. Ryan Dean Sucgang, director of the Human Movement and Artistic Innovation Center, said that the MMSU delegates came with peace. He added that while the competition is fierce, the event is ultimately a friendly gathering among participants of Region 1.

With the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) as this year’s host for the regional event, President Erwin Cadorna welcomed the spectators and participants.

In his speech, Dr. Cadorna said that the regional meet reminds everyone that excellence has two powerful languages—sport, where stamina and teamwork are tested in real time, and culture and the arts, where creativity and imagination are expressed with meaning.

Standing tall against the sky, banners for PASUC-1 and participating institutions were hoisted, with Pangasinan State University and PASUC-1 President Elbert Galas leading the ceremony alongside other SUC-1 Presidents, Sports and Cultural Directors, and Mr. and Ms. RCAF-1 candidates.

Meanwhile, a plaque of recognition was awarded to the outgoing PASUC-1 regional chair, outgoing SUC President, and outgoing regional sports and cultural directors in recognition of their service and leadership.

SUC Presidents of Region 1 were also recognized for their leadership and contributions to sports, culture, and arts development of the region.

Pledging fair play and excellence on behalf of the delegates, Cesar Ian Santos, taekwondo gold medalist in the 2025 National SCUAA Games, and Alchea Clay Cyrus Leones of the PASUC chorale led the oath of sportsmanship.

Aglow with colors, more than 6,000 UNP PATHFit students set the stadium on a night of dazzle to cap the opening ceremony. Tomorrow signals the dawn of fierce competition as the games and events officially begin.
