DOST names PJM as Science Ambassador
By Ian Paul Villanueva
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) honored MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr., as one of the distinguished Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Ambassadors for the year 2026 on Monday, February 16.
The prestigious award, handed personally by DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, Jr., at the 2026 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) in Dagupan City, was made in recognition of Dr. Manzano’s active involvement and support for DOST programs.
As an STI Ambassador, the DOST seeks his support in advocating for the importance of science, technology, and innovation and the promotion of DOST Ilocos Region’s initiatives.
Expressing his gratitude for the recognition, Dr. Manzano said, “I am deeply grateful to DOST for recognizing our humble initiatives.” He also emphasized the university’s impact on local communities, adding that “MMSU’s true focus is ensuring that science, technology, and innovation are not confined to campus, but are felt in the communities that we serve.”
Indeed, MMSU is involved in a number of research and extension projects inside and outside the province, directly benefiting local Ilokano communities.
In presenting the award, the DOST also cited MMSU’s co-hosting of the widely successful National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) held last November 2025.
Beyond his new role as an STI Ambassador, Dr. Manzano had also been accredited as an ASEAN Engineer, a prestigious designation allowing him to practice his profession across Southeast Asia.
