House panel oks bill to sustain MMSU College of Medicine

The House Committee on Higher and Technical Education approved on January 27 at the Batasang Pambansa a proposed measure titled “An Act Sustaining the College of Medicine in Mariano Marcos State University in the City of Batac, Ilocos Norte, to be Known as the Mariano Marcos State University–College of Medicine, and Appropriating Funds Therefor.”
The bill, introduced by Ilocos Norte Representative Angelo Marcos Barba, aims to ensure continued support and funding for the MMSU College of Medicine (COM), which has consistently posted a 100 percent passing rate in the Physicians Licensure Examination and produced a Rank 1 topnotcher in 2023.
The committee hearing led by Representative Jude Acidre approved the measure.
Present during the hearing were MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr., Vice President for Administration and Finance Fides Bernardo Bitanga, and COM Dean James Patrick Peralta.
Dr. Manzano said the committee approval marks only the initial stage of the legislative process. “This is only the first layer of approval, and we hope to get this legislation done to secure sustainable funding for our medicine program that has been providing excellent doctors for the country since 2019. We have been performing well even with limited resources. How much more can we achieve with full and sustained support?” he said.
Once enacted into law, the measure is expected to further strengthen the MMSU College of Medicine and support its role in producing quality doctors for Filipinos. (𝘑𝘊𝘍)
