To capacitate physical educators across the country, the Physical Educators Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PEAP) initiated its 6th International Seminar Workshop at the MMSU Teatro Ilocandia from November 26 to 28.
Gathering around 200 participants from higher education institutions in the Philippines, the workshop emphasized the role and importance of physical education (PE) under the theme, “Enhancing Physical Education Teachers’ Competencies: A Continuous Training Program for Dance, Fitness, Sports, and Research.”
MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr., represented by Human Movement and Artistic Innovation Center (HMAIC) Director Ryan Dean Sucgang, said that educators have the power to shape well-rounded individuals who excel in their physical pursuits and value an active lifestyle.
“We are not just teaching physical skills; we are nurturing confidence and empowering future generations,” he added, underscoring Article XIV, Section 19 of the Philippine Constitution, which promotes PE and sports to develop a healthy citizenry.
Similarly, PEAP Vice President for Internal Affairs Eileen Marie De Leon stressed that the event aims to develop a citizenry, beginning with students or children, who will contribute to the country’s development. She noted that PE not only addresses sedentary lifestyles, but also develops their personalities and social, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
With this, College of Teacher Education dean Ronald Candy Lasaten, represented by Human Movement and Arts Education Department (HMAED) OIC-Chair Riel Anne Batilo, encouraged participants to fully immerse themselves in the various learning sessions.
The event also marked the start of a partnership, as MMSU and PEAP signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen PE teachers’ competencies through continuous professional development in dance, fitness, sports, and research, which will help equip them with the knowledge and skills to teach effectively and support students’ growth.
Expressing support for the collaboration, Vice President for Administration and Finance Fides Bernardo Bitanga assured PEAP that MMSU will fulfil its duties and responsibilities, noting that such events open doors for greater service.
Dr. Nariza Tamayo of the HMAED served as overall committee chair, alongside PEAP President Estela Diaz. Faculty members from the College of Teacher Education’s HMAED and the College of Arts and Sciences’ PE department helped facilitate the event.
On the first day, Prof. Rowell Tagatac, Chief of the Cultural Development under the MMSU-HMAIC, also served as one of the speakers who shared his mastery in folk dance.
Throughout the three-day event, participants will participate in lectures delivered by professors from HEIs in the Philippines and abroad. They will also engage in physical activities such as traditional dances across regions, sports sessions, social dances, and Philippine traditional and non-traditional games.
