Nat’l Dairy Authority and MMSU-CAFSD hold food safety seminar

In observance of the Food Safety Awareness Week, the MMSU College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development - Department of Food Science and Technology (CAFSD-DFST) and the National Dairy Authority (NDA) - Regional Dairy Farmers and Livelihood Center Northern Luzon conducted a seminar on October 27 at the MMSU Center for Flexible Learning.
Themed “Food Safety: Putting Science into Action,” the seminar involved technical sessions aimed at strengthening food safety awareness and understanding of food safety. Topics discussed included the Basics of Food Safety, Food Safety Trends, Flow of Food, Clean Label Dairy: Unlocking Simplicity and Quality in Every Sip, and Keeping Dairy Safe: The Role of a Food Technologist.
Serving as resource speakers were DFST faculty members, Asst. Prof. Efren Renon Jr. and Asst. Prof. Buchard Cutin; and NDA’s food safety and quality assurance officers Ms. Jenny Cabading, Ms. Rica Bianca M. Casela, and Ms. Camille Gertrude L. Agarma.
Attending the event were members of the Batac Association of Mango Growers, personnel from the Philippine Carabao Center headed by OIC Director Joel Cabading, and faculty and students of CAFSD.
CAFSD Dean Charlie Batin commended the Department for initiating the activity and recommended that it be conducted annually to sustain awareness and advocacy on food safety. Meanwhile, NDA Food Technologist Kedesh Mae Dagdagan expressed the agency’s intent to collaborate with the college in similar undertakings.
Observed every fourth week of October by virtue of Proclamation No. 160, Food Safety Awareness Week aims to raise awareness of the value of good quality, safe, and clean food.
According to the Department of Health - National Nutrition Council, food safety refers to "the practice of handling, preparing, and storing food in a way that minimizes the chance that people would contract a foodborne illness."
