Bangui mayor visits MMSU for academic partnership
The Local Government of Bangui, Ilocos Norte, led by Mayor Denton Lawrence Garvida, paid a courtesy visit to Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) on November 24 to show support for the university and explore ways to help students from Bangui studying across MMSU campuses.
Mayor Garvida and his delegation were welcomed at the Ferdinand E. Marcos Hall by Dr. Aris Reynold Cajigal, Vice President for Academic Affairs, representing MMSU President Dr. Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr.
His team included Municipal Administrator Florencio Sales, Jr., Planning and Development Coordinator Rogelio Alupay, Budget Officer Flordeliza Saribay, and Bangui National High School Principal Joel Manuel. MMSU officials were also present during the meeting.
Mayor Garvida shared the LGU’s desire to expand opportunities for Bangui residents, especially those from fishing and agricultural communities, as well as workers in hospitals, banks, and other sectors.
“We want to help our people gain more skills so they can improve their economic lives,” Mayor Garvida said. “Bangui has hardworking communities, and with the right training and education, they can achieve even more.”
He also emphasized their interest in building higher education pathways for students in the Technical-Vocational and Livelihood (TVL) strand of Bangui National High School, which offers a unique major in Energy Equipment Maintenance and Operations (Wind Turbine and Solar Plant Technology), the first of its kind in the country. The LGU hopes this will prepare students for careers that support Ilocos Norte’s vision to become the Renewable Energy Capital of Southeast Asia.
The LGU and MMSU discussed possible training programs and microcredentials that can help fishermen, farmers, youth, and various workers in Bangui gain better job and livelihood opportunities. They also explored how MMSU can support the TVL program through skills development and community-based education.
Dr. Cajigal expressed MMSU’s commitment to work closely with the LGU, “As Dr. Manzano always says, ‘aksyon agad.’ We will act fast and study how we can help you,” he said. “We truly appreciate LGUs that show support, because it is a sign of trust for good partners.”
He assured the delegation that MMSU will explore all possible ways to bring higher education, skills training, and livelihood programs closer to Bangui, in line with the university’s mission as a University for the People. (𝘔𝘔𝘝)
