MMSU-FAAI establishes alumni villa

A new cottage-type building has been constructed at MMSU College of Aquatic Science and Applied Technology (CASAT) in Currimao, Ilocos Norte.

The 84-square-meter building is part of the Alumni Villa (AV), a project initiated by the MMSU Federated Alumni Association Incorporated (FAAI).

Two or three more of such structures will be built in the succeeding years in a bid to transform the CASAT campus into an eco-fishery tourist destination. The villa will be used to accommodate tourists and guests who go to Currimao for rest and recreation.

Prof. Ciriaco Ragual, chief of the Alumni Relation Office (ARO), said the proceeds from the AV will be used to support the FAAI Alumni Financial Assistance Program (AFAP).

"In fact, we have been asking assistance from the alumni here and abroad to help build the other AVs," Ragual said, hoping that through the income generated from the villa, the AFAP will be sustained.

AFAP was launched in 2012 to financially support graduates undergoing review classes and undergraduate students conducting their theses. In its two years of implementation, 28 students and alumni have benefited from the program.

However, it was stopped in 2014 due to lack of funds. Ragual emphasized that more financially-incapable alumni and students could have been assisted if the program had been sustained.

As soon as the program is revived, Prof. Ragual said interested alumni can seek assistance from the alumni coordinator of the college they graduated from.

Meanwhile, FAAI President and Alumni Regent Bismark Angelo Quidang urged MMSU graduates to help build more alumni villas.

“Let’s build more villas so that we can assist more alumni and students” Quidang said.

In line with this, a state-of-the art student center is proposed to be established at CASAT to complement the AV. This will also serve as a recreational facility and review center for graduates.
