MMSU bags 16 medals in nat’l SCUAA

Four MMSU athletes brought home 16 medals at the close of the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) National Games on February 18-23 in Sibalom, Antique.

Janna Marie Quinto from the College of Teacher Education won two silver medals in athletics after throwing the spinning disc and the formidable iron of shot put landing second in the finals of both events. Her coach is Prof. Bengie A. Antonio.

Also, Angel Guieb from the College of Industrial Technology, with Kathleen Faye Galzote and Elica Galzote from the College of Business, Economics and Accountancy, and another swimmer from Pangasinan State University swam to victory after finishing the 200-meter and 800-meter medley relay, which placed them second.

However, Guieb was not satisfied with the feat of the team and still fought in the 800-meter freestyle and brought to the edge of the pool another shining silver medal for the MMSU contingent.

“It was an exhausting struggle from the beginning, but we did our best to finish second,” beamed the swimmers as they promised to maintain, if not improve, their performance in the succedding competitions.

Aside from the silver medals, MMSU swimmers also brought home bronze in 800-meter freestyle, 800-meter freestyle relay,  200-meter freestyle relay;  and in 50-meter, 100-meter, and 200-meter breastrokes.

“It was a good record compared with the previous,” said Prof. Reylito Gonzales, the MMSU’s perpetual coach and trainer of champion swimmers in the annual regional SCUAA. Other coachers of the swimmers are Professors Myrna T. Antonio and Baby R’lene I. Bayoc.

The stallion swimmers remain as the top gold medal haulers in regional SCUAA in 15 consecutive years, a record not easy for the other SUCs to step up to a higher level of this competition.

Of the SCUAA Region I delegation, 85 represented MMSU composed of 60 athletes and 25 University officials, coaches, and support staff.
