MMSU now a member of science, math education consortium

MMSU is now a member of the Capacity Building Program in Science and Mathematics Education (CBPSME) of the Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).

DOST-SEI has expanded the membership of CBPSME as it forged a new cooperation agreement with additional higher education institutions (HEIs) across the country.

The DOST's move stemmed from the desire of HEIs from different parts of the country wanting to avail of the agency’s graduate scholarship programs in science and mathematics education.

In a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was signed last December 10, 2018 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City between DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Peña and the Presidents of the premier HEIs, MMSU, through President Shirley C. Agrupis, joined the consortium with Ateneo de Manila University, Bicol University, Central Luzon State University, De La Salle University, Mindanao State University (MSU) - Marawi, Philippine Normal University, University of San Carlos, University of the Philippines (UP) - Open University (Los Baños), UP College of Education (Diliman, Quezon City), Western Mindanao State University, and West Visayas State University, Cebu Normal University, Leyte Normal University, Saint Mary's University, and MSU Iligan Institute of Technology.

This partnership of the HEIs aims to improve the quality of science and mathematics education in the country and to accelerate the development of critical mass of experts in science and mathematics education through the CBPSME.  With a total of 16 member universities, the DOST-SEI hopes to encourage more scholars who wish to pursue higher education in their respective fields of specializations without the need to go far from their homes.

Secretary Dela Peña urged the member-universities to sustain excellent performance in the courses they offer under the CBPSME, noting that only a few universities were qualified as delivering institutions of the graduate scholarship programs.

"I hope that with the signing of this MoU, we shall have more scholars and we can look forward to the fruits of this collaboration - a better education for our young people," he said.

As the only HEI in Region I selected by the DOST, MMSU started in 2014 as a member of the then National Consortium in Graduate Science and Mathematics Education, now the CBPSME.

To date, three scholars already graduated from the program while 12 are still taking the prescribed graduate degree program -- the Master of Arts in Education major in Science Education, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.
