CBEA mentor gets tourism research grant

A faculty member of the College of Business, Economics, and Accountancy (CBEA) will receive a research grant from the Department of Tourism (DOT) this year.

The DOT has approved Rona Leigh Bueno's grant after she submitted a research proposal entitled: Carrying capacity of farm tourism sites: Basis for Ilocos Norte's sustainable tourism development. Her co-workers are Cherie B. Orpia, former instructor at CBEA but now at the Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College, and Quincy S. Savellano, instructor at CBEA. She will receive the grant from the DOT after signing a memorandum of agreement with the agency on October 9. Her research is one of only 13 research proposals chosen by the agency.

Bueno's study aims to determine the current carrying capacity of local farm tourism sites in the province and suggest the allowable number of visitors in every tourist attraction.

"Due to the massive influx of tourists travelling up north, it is important to determine the carrying capacity of any local farm tourism site in order to avoid congestion, discomfort, and dissatisfaction of visitors," she explained, adding that applying carrying capacity makes the operation sustainable, provides steady income of local communities, and ensures high level of visitors' satisfaction.

Also, the tourism research grant aims to foster evidence-based planning, decision-making, and policy formulation through provision of financial assistance to individual research in tourism.

Conceptualized by the Office of Tourism Development Planning, Research, and Information Management, this new program also seeks to develop a Philippine journal of tourism research and other related topics.

All graduates and post graduate students, faculty members, and tourism practitioners currently affiliated with any academic or tourism institution can apply for the grant.
